The Open was just won with a blade. Ryan Fox's Ping Anser 2D was the first blade putter to win a men's major since Bryson DeChambeau at the 2024 U.S. Open. Every men's major in between was won with something other than a blade, and Scotty Cameron's two new mallets are now in shops.

What's out

The right-handed Phantom 3.2 arrived on June 25. The left-handed 3.2 and the new Phantom 12 followed on July 23. Both are $499 in the US. The UK price for the 3.2 is £479.

Tour use

Ludvig Åberg already uses the 3.2. Phantom 12 prototypes first appeared on tour in February. Lydia Ko was one of the first to put one in play, and she shot a 12-under 60 in her first round with it.

Who it's for

Mid-mallets like the 3.2 suit golfers who want more help than a blade without a big head behind the ball. The 12 is for players who miss the center often and want the putter to forgive it.

The verdict

Try before you buy. Then decide.

$499 is a lot for a putter. Putt with both on a real green, not a shop carpet, and compare them with what you already use. If the new one doesn't hole more from six feet, keep your money.
