Michael Brennan came to the Wyndham Championship, the last event of the regular season, 105th in the FedEx Cup. Only the top 70 go on to the playoffs. On Sunday he won.
How he did it
Brennan, 24, was one behind Beau Hossler when he ran off five straight birdies from the fourth hole, all from inside eight feet. He closed with a 64, birdied the last and finished on 22 under, 258. That tied the tournament record at Sedgefield, last matched by Cameron Young a year ago.
He won by three over Hossler. Ben James, the No. 1 player in the PGA Tour University ranking, came back from falling out of contention on Saturday with a 61 and finished third.
Close to home
Brennan played his college golf at Wake Forest, about 30 miles away. It was his sixth week in a row on the road, and he'd had a couple of bad Sundays lately. Last week at the Rocket Classic he was in the final group and closed with a 73.
- FedEx Cup From 105th to 47th
- Tour wins Two, after last fall's Bank of Utah Championship
- Masters Back next April, which his mother reminded him about on the 18th green
- Only player to move into the top 70 this week
Brooks Koepka didn't make it. He needed a top four and tied for 67th, then called it pathetic that he couldn't get into the postseason.
